Using Telehealth to Build Community Partnerships in Early Intervention: Supporting Families of Young Children With and at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder
Using telehealth, this project will foster partnerships with Alabama’s Early Intervention System to provide early intervention and support for families with infants and toddlers with or at risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Telehealth-based early intervention trainers enable university-based research and community-based intervention to reach families without formal ASD diagnosis and to deliver services in the child’s natural environment, as the field shifts from clinician-implemented to caregiver-implemented approaches. Thirty early interventionists recruited through Alabama’s Early Intervention System will identify children under 3 years old with or at risk for ASD and their caregivers for the project. Three phases with cohorts of 10 early interventionists will follow and compare two methods of remote-coaching delivery using (1) in-the-moment coaching with bug-in-ear technology and (2) web-based coaching meetings with video review. This project will incorporate undergraduate and graduate students majoring in early childhood special education, who would not normally get this kind of experience. They will help with data collection and analysis, as well as planning and implementation of the project.

Readiness for Community Paramedicine and Integrated Mobile Health Care Interventions in Alabama’s EMS Agencies and Hospitals
This project will assess interest and preparedness of Alabama’s emergency medical service (EMS) agencies and hospitals for community paramedicine (CP) or mobile integrated healthcare (MIH) interventions. It will involve UA faculty and a student partnering with Dr. Crawford to survey EMS agencies and hospitals. The survey process will be guided by the Understanding User Context Framework, and intends to identify communities where both EMS agencies and hospitals are ready to engage in starting a CP-MIH intervention. Data collected from the surveys will inform future system-level changes, including state policy, that would be supportive of CP-MIH interventions in Alabama. Findings will be shared with Alabama EMS stakeholders and policymakers. The project includes evaluations of both process and outcomes.

Inaugural New Faculty Community Engagement Tour:
Pickens County Partnership
In Pickens County, the UA group learned about the town's needs and current partnership. Panelists noted that Pickens County is a Medically Underserved Area, as the county ranks 45th in health outcomes among Alabama’s 67 counties. To address health issues in Pickens county, in 2015 approximately $600,000 was obtained from the Alabama Legislature to initiate the UA Pickens County Partnership. Through this partnership, eight projects have been created that include UA faculty and students and Pickens County community organizations. The grant also provides four one-year-long fellowships for recent UA graduates to provide an opportunity for students to serve in health-related capacities while expanding their experience and education. The UA team also stopped by the Pickens County Courthouse, where legend states that Henry Wells, a former a slave, was accused of burning down the courthouse. It is said that a nearby lightning strike etched his image in the window pane of the attic as he peered down at an angry mob. The panelists were: Michele Montgomery, School of Nursing; Paige Johnson, School of Nursing; Jim Marshall, CEO of Pickens County Medical Center; Craig Patterson, Mayor of Gordo; Frances Lewis, Aliceville Public Library; and Jamie Chapman, Superintendent of Pickens County Schools.

Tuscaloosa's One Place:
JUSTICE
This program prepares prisoners in the often difficult task of transitioning from prison to the workforce. With assistance from local employers such as Mercedes-Benz and Phifer Wire, along with several service providers and representatives from the Alabama Department of Corrections, the program follows a curriculum of current employment practices that improve the likelihood of former prisoners getting good jobs. The program follows a model called Core Life Link, widely used to help individuals attain, maintain and advance in their employment. Some 8–10% of prisoners are also veterans and the program takes their needs into consideration.

The Effects of Psychosocial Interventions for Chronic Pain on Health Care Utilization and Opioid Prescriptions in Rural Residents
Working with Whatley Health Services, a non-profit corporation administering a network of federally qualified health clinics, we will explore health care utilization and prescriptions of pain medications among patients with chronic pain. Many patients find themselves in a cycle of visits to health care providers that frequently do not result in increased comfort or better long-term functioning. This study will examine whether behavioral treatments for chronic pain reduce the inefficient utilization of health care services and decrease the need for prescription for pain medications in comparison to a treatment-as-usual control group.

Increasing access to health screenings and health education: The Pickens Health Improvement Program (PHIP)
As part of the UA Pickens Partnership, our project aims to improve the health and well-being of the residents of Pickens County. The project’s primary focus is improving the knowledge of cardiovascular and diabetic risk factors. Through health clinics held in schools and in the community, the Pickens Health Improvement Program (PHIP) has helped to screen over 300 individuals for these risk factors so far this year. This project introduces undergraduate nursing students to rural health care as they run the health clinics and provide health coaching on things such as how to improve cholesterol levels or decrease blood pressure. This project is one that has evolved over the years as a direct result of continued community based participatory research efforts in Pickens County. It has been a continuous effort to improve access to health screenings and to improve the health of those that live and work in Pickens County.

The program seeks to address community needs using a community-engagement research model with community and University personnel working as equal members of teams. The program’s third cohort begins in August 2018. Teams from the first two cohorts have raised over $40 million dollars in grant funds using techniques learned in the program. In addition to about eight teams a year that are involved, about 10 individuals per year also participate.

Assessing Community Readiness for and Attitudes to Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Pickens County
Success of health promotion and disease prevention programs relies on the collaborative efforts of partner organizations, communities, and individuals. Feedback from Belinda Craig indicates there is a need for health promotion programs. However, there is limited understanding of community members’ readiness for or attitudes toward specific health promotion interventions. The purpose of this project is to determine Pickens County’s attitudes toward health promotion campaigns and stage of readiness to prevent obesity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time this type of research has been undertaken in the Black Belt region of Alabama. The project will contribute to the scholarship of engagement in the following ways: 1) data collection for the project will provide senior UA nursing students with a service-learning opportunity designed to gain a better understanding of the importance of community engagement for health promotion; 2) data will serve as a foundation for a longitudinal program of community-based participatory research in Pickens County; and 3) results will enable the investigators to develop tailored interventions to improve the health of the community.

Strengths, Talents, and Resources in Students
This project will provide additional support to two elementary schools and one middle school by providing human resources and expertise to address the needs of students not meeting their potential in school, including those with mild behavioral issues that hinder them from being successful both academically and socially. The goal is to identify and focus on students’ strengths and facilitate their use of these strengths to enhance their engagement with school, set and accomplish goals, and expand their beliefs about their future. This project will also create a space for college students who have a desire to connect with students through individual and small group interactions, providing a valuable resource to the schools, while giving UA students practical, hands-on experience.

Toward a Cultural Adaptation of Pain Management Treatments for Hispanics with Chronic Pain
Research shows Hispanics are more likely to report pain but less likely to receive appropriate pain management compared to other ethnic minorities. Hispanic patients face additional medical barriers due to language and cultural differences. The Department of Psychology, in partnership with Whatley Health Services (WHS), seeks to improve our understanding of the pain needs of Hispanic patients. WHS serves medically underserved residents with a mission of increasing the breadth of services and improving the care of chronic pain patients. In our efforts to examine cultural differences in pain management among Spanish-speaking patients, our research group has been conducting focus groups and key informative interviews to assess the pain needs and likelihood of incorporating pain management as a treatment option among this population. Our preliminary findings provide evidence to continue our collaboration with WHS and start working toward ensuring that cultural adaptations are part of the established pain management treatment of Spanish-speaking patients.

Cognitive Interventions for African American Diabetics
This project will conduct exploratory research that focuses on cognitive interventions for African American older diabetics. Specifically, in this preliminary study, the team is interested in developing materials for study and assessing the feasibility of cognitive intervention. This research will contribute to community engagement in that the community partners will be intricately involved with every aspect of this project including the development of materials and the training of graduate students. It will also be a learning experience for students, because they will be involved with each aspect of the project and will gain first-hand experience with many of the concepts that they learn in the classroom. Our ultimate goal is to use the results of this pilot study to apply for a R01 through NIH. The resources from a R01 will allow us to further ascertain the effectiveness of cognitive interventions in improving glycemic control among diabetics.

Inaugural New Faculty Community Engagement Tour:
Hill Hospital of York, Sumpter County Schools, and Coleman Center for the Arts and Culture
In Sumter County, the group first visited the Coleman Center for the Arts and Culture, a local museum and art education center for grassroots artists. This center promotes positive social change, addresses civic needs, builds local pride and uses creativity to solve community problems. The group also visited Hill Hospital, which provides both preventative and health care, and has engaged with UA in numerous partnerships. The group also learned of the struggles of the Sumter County School system, which suffers from a tight budget for schools resulting from a low tax base. UA has teamed up with this area’s schools in several programs to help develop areas such as leadership and engineering interests. The panelists were: Jackie Clay, Director of the Coleman Center for the Arts and Culture; Tommie Armistead, County Commissioner of District 4 in Sumter County; Marcus Campbell, County Commissioner of District 2 in Sumter County; Tommie Campbell, Chairperson of the Sumter County School Board; and Loretta Wilson, Administrator of Hill Hospital.

Exploring Modern Biology and the Scientific Process
The College of Education (Dr. Kevin Besnoy, Department of Special Education and Multiple Abilities Program) and the Department of Biological Sciences will take a leadership role in assisting pre K-12 school systems by using data to improve student academic outcomes. The purpose of this specific research proposal is vital in developing meaningful models for improving female and minority student retention and comprehension in STEM fields. Middle school is the age range when girls and minority students begin to develop misconceptions about their lack of ability to perform well in science and math. By providing the students with an inquiry-based curriculum highlighting the fundamental concepts in biology presented by professional scientist role models in the classrooms, the students will have tangible experiences of the accessibility and excitement of STEM-based fields. Answers sought include effects of the presence or involvement in the classroom of female and minority scientist role models and/or experience doing original research; perception of their own capability of doing science; improving student understanding and retention of fundamental biological concepts by a) using a year-long integrated curriculum focused on a particular research organism (e.g. fruit flies) and b) using individual lessons used to augment specific conceptual goals?

Black Belt Community Foundation
The final panel discussion of the tour took place in Selma and was led by then CCBP Community Director Chris Spencer, joined by representatives from non-profit business communities. The group discussed ideas for a reimagined and inclusive Selma with a thriving arts district. The group learned about the Black Belt Community Foundation’s mission, which is the focal point for gifts and grants to have an impact on those in the region. The Foundation focuses on consolidating region-wide improvement endeavors by “taking what [they] have to make what [they] need.” Afterwards, the tour was completed by walking across Edmund Pettus Bridge in the footsteps of 600 marchers led by now U.S. Rep. John Lewis on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. The bridge has come to symbolize the African American community’s nonviolent struggle and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. The panelists were: Sheryl Z. Smedley, Selma Chamber of Commerce; Martha B. Lockett, Black Belt Community Foundation Board Member; The Rev. Lawrence Crawford, Pastor of Clinton Chapel AME; Glenda Deese, President of Glenda Davis Reese Foundation; The Rev. Leodis Strong, Pastor of Brown Chapel AME Church; and Felecia Lucky, President of the Black Belt Community Foundation.

Inaugural New Faculty Community Engagement Tour:
Wilcox County, Golden Dragon Plant, and Gee's Bend
In Wilcox County, the group visited the Golden Dragon Plant, a Chinese-owned manufacturer of pipes for air conditioning machinery which has benefitted the region economically and socially. The group then arrived in the Gee’s Bend community, where they met Mary Ann Pettway, manager of the quilting cooperative, who told them how the quilters began their craft out of necessity. These imaginative and expressive quilts now make up a crucial chapter of African American art, and have been exhibited in places such as the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. The panelists were: Charles Shephard, Director of Workforce Development, Director of Coastal Alabama Community College at Thomasville Campus; Vic Adkinson, Superintendent of Thomasville City Schools; Danny D’Andrea, Thomasville Business Office Manager, Alabama Power; Amy Prescot, Executive Director of Thomasville Chamber of Commerce; Alberta Dixon, District 5 City Council Member; and Martha Gramelspacher, Thomasville Public Library.

Determining Sources and Quality of Inorganic and Organic Nutrients Exported from Agricultural Watersheds
The goal is to identify non-point sources of organic and inorganic nutrients in agricultural watersheds under varying intensity of land use and management and evaluating their changes with seasonality and hydrology. Agricultural lands, accounting for 40% of land in the United States, are among the most important non-point pollution (pollution from diffuse sources) impairing surface water quality nationwide. However, our abilities to recognize sources and actions responsible for surface water nutrient variations are limited. This project will shed light on an agricultural watershed in Alabama, where non-point source nutrient pollution has been a concern but remains poorly understood.

Establishing Alabama GeoKids Initiative
The purpose of “Establishing AlabamaGeoKids Initiative" is to develop a curriculum for teaching Earth Science in K-12 education. The curriculum will specifically target schools of minorities and underrepresented student groups in the Tuscaloosa area. The ultimate goal is to establish several partnerships between the Department of Geological Sciences and K-12 institutions. For this partnership, we selected Arcadia Elementary. We propose to create a program that will establish a tradition of teaching Geological Sciences through creating a well-defined syllabus that combines classical fundamentals of Earth processes and new theories in evolution and climate change. This approach is aligned with the new proposition of the Alabama Department of Education that requires students to learn about evolution and climate change.

Collective Parent Engagement and Service Learning at Davis-Emerson Middle School
This project expands on work currently being done by Dr. Alameda-Lawson at Holt Elementary School, where she is implementing and evaluating the Collective Parent Engagement (CPE) Program. The aim is to promote stronger parent involvement at Davis-Emerson Middle School (DEMS). The CPE approach is unique in that it proceeds beyond conventional “parent involvement” strategies that aim to recruit individual parents to become involved in service to the school. The CPE works to recruit, train and organize groups of parents to design and run programs that can support the economic, social, health and educational needs of parents — not only at school, but also in the neighborhood community. Additionally, students at DEMS will be invited to participate in a service-learning project, thus promoting their engagement with their community and school.

Determine Non-Point Sources of Organic and Nutrient Pollutants in Agricultural Watersheds in Rural Alabama
This project, titled “Determine Non-Point Sources of Organic and Nutrient Pollutants in Agricultural Watersheds in Rural Alabama,” will identify non-point pollution sources of organic matter and nutrients, such as agricultural runoff, in the Bear Creek Watersheds (BCW) in northern Alabama, home to 104 known fish species. Because the BCW supports extensive agricultural activities that are rapidly altering the chemical characteristics of soils and water, which degrades water quality, it has been identified as a Strategic Habitat Unit of concern by the Geological Survey of Alabama. In partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture, this research will identify potential hazards and ways to enhance water quality by monitoring the concentration of species, pathogens and microbial products. By identifying the source, environmental agencies and stakeholders will be able to work with farmers to reduce and clean up nutrient and organic pollution in a more efficient and economical manner.

Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art K-12 Fellowship Program
In 2008, Paul R. Jones donated a portion of his collection of African American art to the University of Alabama. With over 1700 pieces, the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art is one of the largest collections of African American art in the world. Jones was known as a passionate collector who sought to collect from both well-known and lesser-known artists, a quality which makes his collection distinct. The Paul R. Jones Collection is designed to share the works of American artists and their significance with the people of Alabama and beyond and to be used to educate students on the importance of art in life. Works from the collection are on exhibit year-round at the Paul R. Jones Gallery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and are exhibited in galleries on the University of Alabama campus and at other educational institutions and venues. The collection is incorporated into curricula at the University of Alabama, providing students with opportunities to learn and experience the significance of art first-hand.

LAMP:
Reducing Disparities with Literacy-Adapted Psychosocial Treatments for Chronic Pain: The Effect of the LAMP Intervention on Patients' Pain and Psychosocial Functioning
The Behavioral Pain Management Team in UA’s Department of Psychology and Whatley Health Services have been working together for three years to deliver pain treatment in rural Alabama through a literacy-adapted psychosocial treatment for chronic pain called Learning About My Pain (LAMP). Through LAMP, patients learn a number of pain-management skills to improve their psychosocial functioning and obtain a better quality of life. Psychosocial treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and pain education, have been found to be effective for pain. Despite growing evidence, minimal efforts have been made to make these treatments accessible to patients with low socioeconomic status, who often have low health literacy and face unique stressors that might interfere with their ability to meet the cognitive demands associated with these treatments.

Leveraging Local Knowledge and GIS Modeling to Quantify Wastewater Discharges in Hale and Wilcox Counties
Rural residents without sewer access typically use septic systems to treat human waste. However, septic systems quickly fail in impermeable Black Belt clay. Many poor residents choose not to invest in systems destined to fail, instead discharging raw sewage onto the ground nearby through so-called “straight pipes.” This project pursues collaboration with local partners to map failing septic systems and straight pipes in Hale and Wilcox Counties. Geographic Information System (GIS) modeling will be utilized to estimate impacts on water quality — including infectious pathogens — and public health.

Alabama in Hobson City Initiative
This project bridges the gap between academy and community by applying University resources to community-identified goals for research. It speaks to different levels of historical recovery and community historiography in Alabama’s oldest historic Black town. The project will assuage issues of accessibility for rural communities by providing a digitally based resource to document the variety of projects in the Alabama in Hobson City Initiative, all of which contribute to the recovery of community history through oral history collection, photography, curating historical documents, and cemetery research and documentation.

Engaging USDA Scientists and Landowners for Identifying Sources of Nutrient Pollution in Agricultural Wastelands
Agricultural lands, accounting for 40 percent of land in the U.S., are among the most important non-point sources of nutrient pollution impairing surface water quality nationwide. However, our ability to recognize sources and actions responsible for surface water nutrient variations is extremely limited. The goal of this community-engaged project is to work with our community partners to identify “hot” watersheds exporting nutrients and pathogens to receiving streams and rivers. The team has performed bimonthly field trips to sample water and soils in agricultural watersheds under varying intensity of land use and management in the Bear Creek in northern Alabama. The group measured a series of water quality parameters including inorganic and organic nutrients, as well as fecal coliforms. Data identified those watersheds more environmentally responsible for disproportionately large (relative to the watershed size) amounts of nutrients to nearby streams.

SOAR:
Using CBPR to Bridge the Campus-to-Community Gap
Project SOAR, a mixed-methods study, focuses on issues faced by aging, ethnically diverse and underserved individuals facing health and mental-health disparities. Using community-based participatory research (CBPR) enables community partnerships to address persistent problems of healthcare disparities among aging and underserved populations. Project SOAR partnered with one rural community and one urban community and recruited and trained 15 community members into project advisory councils (PACs). PACs provide researchers with opinions and advice on recruitment materials, surveys and interventions on topics including diabetes, dementia, PTSD and environmental justice and health issues. They have worked with 11 independent researchers. Project SOAR is generating new research partnerships focused on community needs and is well received within the communities.

Combining CBPR and Engaged Scholarship to Conduct Nutritional and Physical Activity Audits in an Underserved Community
This project is composed of research activities and results of environmental audits conducted by the Health Education and Promotion Research Center (HEPRC), a community organization based in Holt, Alabama, and University of Alabama students in Holt. The HEPRC is a young university/community partnership using community-based participatory research (CBPR) strategies to benefit this small, unincorporated community with a declining standing but a rich history. The HEPRC’s mission is to empower the community to meet its own health needs through screening, education and policy change. Assessing Holt’s nutrition and physical activity environments were essential to this project; with a secondary purpose of teaming up students with community members to enhance their evaluated team member opinions about the experience. The assessment showed that the availability of quality food is limited, and increasing the community’s health may mean increasing the availability of healthy food options, improving the physical activity environment and reforming the local economy.

New Faculty Community Engagement Tour 2018:
Uniontown
In Uniontown, the UA team learned of the ongoing civil rights struggle over the Arrowhead Landfill, Alabama's largest mega-waste dump, where another setback has occurred due to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's dismissal of two complaints made by the residents. Despite this, Uniontown is also the home to Harvest Select Catfish Plant, which has become one of the nation's primary farmers, harvesters, processors, and distributors of American catfish. In 2008, it had become the first U.S. catfish processor to be Best Aquaculture Practices certified by the Global Aquaculture Alliance. Today, there are more than 250 trained employees producing over 750,000 pounds of catfish weekly. The panelists were: Emefa Butler, C.H.O.I.C.E Nonprofit; John H. Heard III, Superintendent of Perry County Schools; and Gilbert Sentell, Sentell Engineering.

Jimmie Lee Jackson Historic Marker, Judson College, and Main Street Marion
In Perry County, the UA group visited Marion, where they first stopped at the Jimmie Lee Jackson historic marker. Jackson was shot in 1965 by an Alabama State Trooper during a protest during the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King's eulogy at Jackson's funeral helped inspire the famous march from Selma to Montgomery. The group also made a brief visit to the Judson College campus, a school with a legacy of producing women who worked to improve society. Now Judson serves as an undergraduate college for both men and women, and is associated with the Alabama Baptist Convention. Lastly, the group also learned of the Main Street Marion initiative, which is focused on the revitalization of historic downtown Marion by bringing jobs, dollars, and people together. The panelists were: Frances Ford, Executive Director and Healthcare Coordinator, Sowing Seeds of Hope; Col. Ed Passmore, Vice President for Student Affairs/Commandment of Cadets/Director for Leadership and Career Development, Marion Military Institute; Cathy Trimble, Principal of Francis Marion School; and Katrina Easley, County Extension Coordinator.

UA Pickens County Partnership & Growth and Progress in Aliceville
In Pickens County, the UA group learned that Pickens County is a Medically Underserved Area, as the county ranks 45th in health outcomes among Alabama’s 67 counties. To address health issues in the county, in 2015 approximately $600,000 was obtained from the Alabama Legislature to initiate the UA Pickens County Partnership, through which eight projects have been created that include UA faculty and students and Pickens County community organizations. The grant also provides six one-year-long fellowships for recent UA graduates to provide an opportunity for students to serve in health-related capacities while expanding their experience and education. Additionally, the group learned about the initiative, backed by a grant from the CDC to ALProHealth and Alabama Cooperative Extension System, to address obesity in the state. Aliceville in Pickens County was the recipient, and is now the location of a new walking track and pavilion used for a bi-weekly farmer's market. The panelists were: Parthenia Oliver, Nurse Practitioner, Whatley Health Services, Inc.; Debbie Rodgers, Owner of Court Square Coffee; Rodney Shamery, Coordinator of Fatherhood Program, Family Resource Center; and Cynthia Simpson, Director of Pickens County Community Action.

Helping Families Initiative (HFI)
The Helping Families Initiative helps Alabama communities use existing resources to save the futures of young people at risk of using illegal drugs or committing other crimes while making classrooms and communities safer. Over the long-term it also reduces the number of young people sentenced to prison where they often become career criminals, contribute to prison overcrowding and costs. Helping Families creates these benefits by bringing local leaders — district attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers, mayors, county commissioners, educators, judges, local foundation officials and leaders of public and private social services — together to build support for collaborative action that identifies young people at risk and their personal and family risk factors. It addresses these factors through a multi-disciplinary team that coordinates services of multiple agencies depending on needs.
